Lectures, workshops, study sessions... I enjoy them all! Last week, a super group of students studying for the @soasdiplomainasianart @soasuni Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art visited the Department of Asia's study room @britishmuseum . Together, we looked at and talked about a selection of Gandhara stone and stucco sculptures. I had previously met some of the students on one of my gallery talks, so I knew they would be up for a good discussion - and they were! We spoke together about all aspects of these objects from the circumstances of their acquisition and arrival @britishmuseum, to the makers marks on the reverse of some sculptures, and even how you can calculate the diameter of a stupa drum from the curve of a yakshi panel! A big shout out to Gavin and Ben, the Assistant Collection Managers who carefully brought all of these objects from the Asia stores to the study room where they set them out so perfectly! None of the workshops work (see what I did there?!) without their expert knowledge. Such a fantastic experience speaking about #SloaneLab at the Towards a National Collection conference @britishmuseum! #SloaneLab is 1 of 5 #DiscoveryProjects awarded £14.5million by @ahrcpress to create a unified national collection of the UK's museums, libraries, galleries and archives using digital technology. The aim is to maintain global leadership in #digitalhumanities and #arts #research. #SloaneLab is about connections. It is about finding ways to bring disparate collections from different institutions together and sharing them with as many people as possible digitally. To meet this challenge, a multi-disciplinary team is working with the remarkably diverse collections of Sir Hans Sloane which are now spread across the @britishmuseum, @natural_history_museum & @britishlibrary. Together, we are trying to find ways of connecting these collections while also connecting them with people. The stories embedded within each object, each catalogue entry, are central to answering the complex questions we are asking of the collections. However, many people and stories intrinsically connected with what survives in our stores and archives are invisible. So, this talk was also about absence. My fab panel included Anne Luther of #DigitalBenin, Helen Graham of #CongruenceEngine and was chaired by Esme Ward Director @mcrmuseum! #TaNC #TowardsANationalCollection

The @nationaltrust is doing something very right. I've been a member since having my little one because it was an easy day out with convenient cafes and all important baby changing facilities! Over the last few years, I've noticed a subtle but important shift: the staff and volunteers are as friendly, engaged and helpful as they've always been, and now the sites themselves feel warmer, more welcoming and the interpretation (hello museum and cultural sites speak!) is more compelling and imaginative. Take #SuttonHoo which we visited last weekend. All great and one thing stood out: next to a bench in a beautiful valley between Tranmer House and the grave mounds was a panel text encouraging you to imagine what the scenes were like more than a 1000 years ago. Sitting in the sunshine, prompted by these words, I let my imagination roam free. It was a much needed moment of calm imaginating (kiddo's word).
